Indiana University officials said Monday that an in-person, outdoor commencement ceremony will be planned for all campuses in May.

Only graduates can attend, and IU will require them to undergo COVID-19 testing requirements, according to a news release.

In an email to IU students, president Michael A. McRobbie announced that undergraduate and graduate students who will graduate in spring 2021 would be allowed to attend the ceremony. Members of the class of 2020 whose ceremonies were canceled due to COVID-19 also are invited. Graduates who do not attend in person will still be recognized.

In-person attendance is limited to the graduates themselves, while family and friends may attend the ceremony virtually.

“Commencement is one of the most beloved ceremonies at any university across the nation, and it was an agonizing decision for us to have to cancel it last May,” McRobbie said. “We were all bitterly disappointed that this was necessary.
