A nationwide call-out is underway to find the muralist who will create downtown Bluffton’s next public art piece.

Bluffton NOW! and the American Legion Post 111 have announced the timeline of creating a military-themed mural on the north-facing side of the Legion, located at 111 W. Washington St. in Bluffton.

Proposals are due Tuesday, Aug. 17. The mural would be installed by Monday, Sept. 20 — the week of the Bluffton Free Street Fair.

The brick wall is approximately 60-feet-by-14-feet and the mural can cover the whole surface, according to information posted on the Bluffton NOW! website.

“The goal of this program is to construct a mural within downtown Bluffton that will pay homage to branches of the military,” the information said. “The mural project proposals could reflect the following: Pay tribute to the branches of the military of the United States; pay tribute to PVT Grover Sheets, veteran (killed in action for whom) the Legion is named after; reflects the battlefield cross; must contain the American Legion emblem.”

Sheets was Wells County’s first World War I fatality. The “mood board” compiled for the project includes his portrait, a flying eagle and battle images, among other images for inspiration.

A jury of 10 members of the Bluffton NOW! mural committee and the Legion will select the muralist. Learn more and view related materials at www.blufftonnow.org/mural
