The Indiana State Department of Health on Friday reported 3,595 new cases of COVID-19, up from 2,326 the previous day, bringing the pandemic total in the state to 982,444 cases.

The department also reported 29 new deaths from COVID, raising the total to 15,469.

The seven-day moving average of new deaths rose from 23 per day to 24 per day, the health department said. Almost 90% of those who have died of COVID in Indiana are at least 60 years old.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 decreased from 1,838 on Wednesday to 1,780 on Thursday, their lowest mark since Aug. 21. About 22% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds are occupied by COVID patients. Hospitalizations reached a recent peak of 2,687 on Sept. 13.

More than 3.3 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Friday at 5 a.m., after a daily increase of 4,486. Department statistics show 60.1% of Indiana residents 18 and older are now fully vaccinated.

The state released the latest statistics for so-called breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths on Thursday, reflecting data through Sept. 30. The numbers, which are updated weekly, showed that 44,479 Hoosiers who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have since tested positive for the virus, while 907 required hospitalization and 420 died. The average age of a breakthrough death was 79 years old.
