One municipality in the Region will consider a new ordinance to regulate electric bikes and scooters, while another will approve funds for local building renovations.

Valparaiso City Council; When: 6 p.m. Monday, May 11

The Valparaiso City Council will consider a new ordinance aimed at regulating the use of electric bicycles and electric scooters throughout the city.
The proposed ordinance shows riders must be 16 or older to operate the transportation modes on public roads. Riders under 16 must wear helmets when riding and cannot operate any device that can attain a speed over 20 mph. Anyone over 16 with electric bikes or scooters that travel above 20 mph will not be allowed on downtown sidewalks, but are permitted to ride anywhere from Jefferson to Indiana (north to south); Morgan to Campbell (east to west) and all of the cross streets within the area.

Merrillville Town Council; When: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 12
Where: Merrillville Municipal Complex, 7820 Broadway
Merrillville's Town Council will approve $252,555 in funds to make improvements to the town's municipal complex, which houses multiple government offices.
The itemized renovations include repairs to exterior concrete walls, replacement of roofing panels, exterior painting and improvements to the main hallway, planning department office, administration office and human resources office.
