MISHAWAKA — Mike Herrman glided around the Merrifield ice rink Wednesday, going slowly at first, but eventually picking up speed.

Not on ice skates, but on a skateboard.

His test of the Mishawaka parks department's new portable skate park was done on a surface that just a few months ago had a layer of ice on it.

On Saturday, the park with quarter pipe and wedge ramps, along with other features for skateboarders and people on bikes and scooters, will officially open.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Merrifield complex will take place at 1 p.m. as the free skate park will be open for business until 8 p.m.
