SOUTH BEND — Almost every day since construction began on a pair of “tiny houses” just off Portage Avenue, people have stopped at the site wanting to get a peek inside the sleek two-story homes with wood and black steel exteriors.

Once inside, visitors notice the airy, minimalist look, with concrete floors and oversize windows that take up much of the northwest walls.

“People are like, ‘Oh, wow, that’s a lot bigger than I thought,’” said Jen Miller, who runs New Carlisle-based Provision Construction & Design with her husband, Will. “I’ve heard probably 10 times, ‘I love the vibe.’”

Three months after their groundbreaking, the finished tiny houses, at 907 and 907 ½ Portage Ave., went on display for the public Saturday during a showcase organized by the Home Builders Association of St. Joseph Valley.

Gary and Diane Jenslow, of South Bend, stopped by the event because they had seen tiny houses on HGTV, but not in real life.
