The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is coming to the Region, a plan commission will consider a proposal for a 300-plus lot development, a data center company will hold an open house and more.

Here are a few things to watch across Region government this week:

Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in Gary

When: Monday, April 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Where: Roma K. Ivey Community Room at the Gary Public Library

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is holding numerous listening sessions on affordability across the state this month, including one in Gary on Monday.

The listening sessions followed a March 24 investigative inquiry that invited the state’s five investor-owned utility companies, including NIPSCO, to a hearing in Indianapolis.

The IURC will use information from the inquiry and these listening sessions to determine what steps it should take next, the organization said in a release. The IURC is responsible for regulating utilities — and the costs the companies charge consumers — across Indiana.

Sentinel Data Centers Open House

When: Thursday, April 16, at 6 p.m.

Where: Lowell High School, 2051 East Commercial Drive

Sentinel Data Centers, a New York City-based company, will hold an open house regarding a proposed data center in Eagle Creek Township, a community a few miles east of the high school hosting this event.

At the Lake County Plan Commission’s March 18 meeting, leaders opted to defer consideration of a rezoning from agricultural land to light industrial until May 20, citing this public forum as a leading reason to await consideration of the rezoning.

Hammond Common Council

When: Monday, April 13, at 6 p.m.

Where: Hammond City Hall, 2nd Floor, Council Chambers at 5925 Calumet Ave.

Agenda highlights:

Hammond leaders will consider whether to issue bonds totaling up to $6 million to help fund the “acquisition of public safety radios” as well as a “fire apparatus.”

At the council’s March 23 meeting, Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. told the council that Hammond’s police and fire departments had radios that were “badly in need of replacement,” and that they were 10-12 years old. He also mentioned that the fire department was “in bad need of another fire engine.”

Though the city can issue bonds up to that $6 million ceiling, it does not necessarily have to issue bonds totaling that amount.

The council’s full agenda packet is available on the city’s website.

Winfield Plan Commission

When: Tuesday, April 14, at 6 p.m.

Where: Winfield Town Hall, 10645 Randolph St.

Agenda highlights:

Winfield’s Plan Commission will hold a public hearing and consider a primary plat for a 328-lot development known as Cornerstone. The proposal sits to the northeast of Robert A. Taft Middle School.

Region Holdings, Inc. owns the land, and Olthof Homes, a local developer with experience in Northwest Indiana, is requesting approval of the primary plat. Oltholf constructed The Willows and Greenview subdivisions in Crown Point.

The Plan Commission’s full agenda is available on the city’s website.
