EVANSVILLE — Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. employees will receive a fatter paycheck at the end of next month.

Approximately 3,100 of them will see a $1,000 stipend in their bank accounts as part of their May 28 pay deposit. Employees in a regularly appointed status as of Nov. 13, 2020, and who will still be employed on May 1 are eligible for the additional money.

"The EVSC Board of School Trustees and I firmly believe this expense is worth every penny," EVSC Superintendent David Smith said in a video announcement. "Quite simply, without your work and commitment, of all of our employees, we would not have been able to safely reopen our doors and keep them open, especially during a year when so many children in the United States have had no opportunity to experience in-person learning."

Smith told the Courier & Press that EVSC wouldn't have been able to hand out the stipends without federal COVID-19 relief funds. Earlier this year, the state said it would allocate an estimated $24 million to EVSC in CARES 2.0 money. Smith said cost reductions the district previously undertook — including leaving vacant central office staff positions open — also made the stipends possible.
