The Hancock County Jail has begun booking suspects into its satellite facility inside the Hancock County Community Corrections Center, which is next door to the county jail.
Called “Jail II,” the space — refurbished at a cost of about $176,000 over the past several months — is key to the county’s strategy for screening and quarantining prisoners to thwart the spread of COVID-19.
A total of 25 inmates now occupy space at Jail II, which has a capacity of about 100, officials said.
The arrangement is considered temporary until the new jail, under construction at the county farm east of Greenfield, is finished later this year or in early 2022.
