MUNCIE — The City of Muncie is looking to potentially boost green energy production and fix some urban blight by developing a solar farm on the long-vacant grounds where the Muncie Chevrolet plant once stood.
RACER Trust and the City of Muncie announced on Tuesday that they have reached an agreement for the city to purchase the 53-acre main parcel of the property located at 1200 W. Eighth St.
How much money the city will pay for the site hasn't been publicly announced due to a non-disclosure agreement with RACER Trust over the pending sale. Officials said the needed funds would come from the city's EDIT account.
"We have a purchase agreement, but we are not able to disclose the site payment," Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour told The Star Press on Tuesday. The city has gotten two appraisals for the lot, and is currently in the process of environmental studies.
RACER will retain its environmental cleanup obligations for the property, working under the oversight of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. The sale would also be dependent on nothing critical being found during the environmental study.
