LAFAYETTE – As of Jan. 1, all women looking to receive an abortion in Indiana are now required to have an ultrasound 18 hours before the procedure.
The law was originally signed in 2016 by then-Gov. Mike Pence, but was challenged by Planned Parenthood, resulting in a lawsuit. The IndyStar reported that Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill defended the law, arguing it gave women time to reflect on a momentous life decision.
The law has been blocked since 2017, when a federal judge ruled against it, which was upheld by a federal appeals court.
In a court filing made in August 2020, lawyers for Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky agreed that the injunction blocking the law should end Jan. 1 of 2021. Both sides asked U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton to dismiss the lawsuit the same month
The law applies to all abortions performed in the state, including the Planned Parenthood of Lafayette location. The clinic is operated by Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky and is located in Lafayette on Mezzanine Drive.
