OXFORD – Voters in Benton Community School Corp. district agreed Tuesday to a property tax increase, granting the district's operating levy referendum.
Benton schools were one of 14 school districts in Indiana with a referendum on the ballot for Tuesday’s primary.
The question was added to ballots within the school corporation’s district, including voters in Benton and Tippecanoe counties, and the official vote count, according to the Benton County Clerk’s office, was 1,585-1,269 in favor.
In total, the referendum, which would impose an operating levy — a tax to support additional funds for day-to-day school operating costs – of up to 31 cents per $100 of property tax at assessed value for the next eight years.
For example, if a house in Benton County was assessed at $100,000, the levy from property tax would be $310. Property owners in Benton County already pay 61 cents per $100 of assessment, so the current property tax for a home assessed at $100,000 would be $610.
