LAFAYETTE – Tippecanoe County remains classified as “orange” by the Indiana State Department of Health, despite every surrounding county reaching the “red” marker.
Each county that borders Tippecanoe — Benton, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery Warren and White counties — reached the "red" classification Wednesday, a weekly metric that marks the seven-day all tests given positivity rate and cases per 100,000 residents.
During a health briefing Wednesday, Dr. Jeremy Adler, Tippecanoe County’s health officer, said while it is difficult to predict what will happen in the next weeks, he could see a trend similar to the surge of local cases following Thanksgiving in early December happening once again.
“One of the things we’re concerned about is with the winter holidays, holiday gatherings and holiday travel—we’re going to see a significant increase in cases in the next coming weeks,” Adler said. “This will lead to another surge, and if that surge is large enough, it could propel us into the red category.”
There has been a recent decrease in the average number of cases, which Adler said was likely due to decreased testing over the holidays.
