MUNCIE — Indiana Secretary of State Holli Sullivan is having the VSTOP group at Ball State University double the number of Hoosier counties in which it will audit polling results, starting with this November's election.
Sullivan visited the BSU campus Friday to make the announcement. The Voting System Technical Oversight Program, or VSTOP, is part of the Bowen Center for Public Affairs at the university. The doubling of audits in Indiana will take VSTOP's efforts from auditing elections in five counties to 10 counties as the state works to build assurance in local election results.
“Doubling the number of audits the state conducts is another vital step to providing transparency to voters and increasing confidence in our state’s electoral process,” Sullivan said.
The secretary of state's office oversees elections in Indiana and partners with VSTOP on the audits. In 2020, Indiana and VSTOP conducted audits in Cass, LaPorte, Madison, Marion and Vigo counties. Counties receiving audits after the general election this year have yet to be determined.
University President Geoffrey S. Mearns was on hand for the announcement and said providing such service to the community and state was part of Ball State's mission.
