Frankfort was ranked in the top 10 safest cities in Indiana due to its low violent crime rate.

SafeWise conducted a study that ranked 38 different Indiana cities that met the reporting criteria required. Frankfort ranked ninth on the list behind Dyer, Zionsville, St. John, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Chesterton and Noblesville.

Four of the top ten ranked cities of 2022 were new to the list, including Dyer, St. John, Chesterton and Frankfort.

According to SafeWise, Frankfort’s violent crime rate is .4, which places it as the third lowest on the list behind number one ranked Dyer and number three ranked St. John. However, Frankfort was reported to have a property crime rate of 10.4, which places it as tenth on the list in that category.

According to SafeWise, property crimes in Indiana have been reportedly decreasing over the years, but Frankfort’s previous rates were unreported. However, the heightened rate experienced by Frankfort may align with Safewise’s report that 31 percent of Indiana residents said the security of their property was affected by the pandemic, which is higher than the national average.

Mayor Judy Sheets expressed that the ranking is likely derived from the Frankfort Police Department’s increased proficiency in addressing crime and the community members’ dedication to improving the city.

“I think it’s very exciting. It says a lot for our city. It says a lot for our police department as well,” said Sheets. “We have a great police department, and they work hard every day to keep us safe in this community. I am very thankful for them.”

Sheets stated that the community’s ranking is likely to increase in the future as property crimes decrease in the city. According to Sheets, the ranking instills even further pride for the city in her and other city officials.

“I’m excited about it. I’m happy to be a part of this community. I think we live in a great community, and I think it says a lot for us and our police department,” said Sheets. “We have a great police department. We have a great police chief. I know we are thinking of new ways every day that we can improve this community.”

Frankfort is one of the new cities on the list, but city officials expect that Frankfort will become a regular on lists of the “safest cities in Indiana.”
