Emmalise Roach, eighth-grader at Eastern Greene Middle School, feels like it’s common for people to not really feel like their voices are heard because there are so many people in the world.
Brooklyn Johnson, also an eighth-grader at the school, agrees, and notices that people her age can be thought of as just kids, not as the people who are the next generation.
“People are listening, but they’re not really actually listening to you, if you know what I mean,” she said. “They hear you, but they’re not listening.”
But thanks to students’ own hard work, the vision of their teacher Gina Mitchell, eighth-grade language arts teacher at Eastern Greene Middle School, and collaboration with Jennifer Borland, curator of TEDxBloomington, students are elevating their voices through a free, virtual TEDxYouth@Bloomington event.
Area students will be discussing topics they’re passionate about during the 3-5 p.m. Saturday event, and they each played a role putting it together, from finding the right music to play during the event to marketing it. Students prerecorded and edited their TED talks, but the event will still have a live component, partly through the chat function. To register, visit tinyurl.com/tedxtogether.
