MUNCIE — Friendly, passionate, dedicated to his community and always willing to lend a helping hand: that's how Muncie-area residents remember Eric Talley, the Boulder, Colorado, police officer who was killed in a mass shooting Monday at a supermarket there.

Talley attended Ball State from 1997 through 2004, earning a bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's degree in information computer science.

During that time, say friends and one of his Ball State professors, he had an impact as an energetic student, thoughtful alumnus and passionate mentor in the local community.

Those who knew Talley were shocked to see news reports Tuesday morning naming him as one of 10 people killed in the Boulder shooting, but they said it was no shock that as a police officer, he was the first one on scene to help.

It's just who he was.
