Four Monroe County Jail inmates have tested positive for COVID-19 during the past week, the first cases of the virus to be reported at the jail since the start of the pandemic.

A Tuesday afternoon news release from Sheriff Brad Swain said two male medium-security cellmates at the correctional center showed symptoms and tested positive last week. Both were transferred to medical cells for observation, Swain said.

A few days later, two inmates from a different cellblock had symptoms that prompted testing; they, too, had the coronavirus and were isolated from other inmates.

“The inmates who tested positive have no, or mild symptoms, and there is little present concern about their health being in danger,” the news release states.

Swain said jail officials have been in contact with the Indiana Department of Health about the presence of COVID-positive inmates and received additional guidelines for precautionary measures to employ.
