More than 12,000 people made the daily drive from St. Joseph County to Elkhart County for work in 2018, according to state data. In the coming years, the route for many of those commuters could be quicker and safer, thanks to a series of road projects coming to Michiana.

The Michiana Area Council of Governments announced it will pay for more than $34 million in traffic projects in the area, including additional lanes and a multi-use bike path on McKinley Avenue in Mishawaka.

The projects, which are selected by MACOG, will be paid for by federal transportation grants and are scheduled for completion over the next six to eight years.

The proposed work to McKinley Avenue will add three additional lanes, one going each way, and a turn lane, between Division Street and Merrifield Avenue, as well as an approximately eight-foot-wide, multi-use path on the south of McKinley with a sidewalk on the north.

Chris Jamrose, Mishawaka’s city engineer, said the main goal of the McKinley construction is to ease congestion along the busy thoroughfare connecting St. Joseph and Elkhart counties.
