The Board of Works approved a contract Tuesday morning that will add artistic covers to traffic signal cabinets around Shelbyville.
The contract is between the City of Shelbyville and Indiana Department of Transportation, and will be paid for by a grant the Blue River Community Foundation received.
“We received a grant from Lilly Endowment, the ‘Gifts and Implementations grant,’ so we are going to have about 12-15 more of these to do across the county,” said BCRF Executive Director Jennifer Jones.
The board approved one cover Tuesday morning, and will have to approve each additional cover.
There is already a cover on the signal cabinet located at the corner of Mechanic and Harrison Streets.
“It’s a vinyl wrap,” Jones said. “It should need no maintenance, should last several years, but should it be vandalized, it’s not painted on to the box. It can just be taken off. So if we have an issue where something is spray-painted on and we can’t figure out a way to remove it, it will just be peeled off.”
“Also down the road, should it just not be very attractive anymore because it’s old and weathered and things like that, we would have it removed,” she added.
