A surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations over the last week has Henry Community Health at capacity.

The Emergency Department has seen an influx of patients seeking treatment for COVID-19 as well as other illnesses and life threatening issues. With the ED admitting more patients, it has become necessary for HCH to postpone some elective surgeries. The severity of illness has extended patient lengths of stay which has crippled bed availability.

“We evaluate on a daily basis to determine if we are able to accommodate elective surgeries,” said Shelley Wilson, chief nursing officer.

The struggle with workforce shortages continues to pose additional challenges for Henry Community Health and other health systems across the region. Transferring patients to a higher level of care continues to be difficult.

As people gather over the holidays, it is important to remain vigilant in wearing a mask, washing hands and social distancing. The best defense against COVID-19 is to get vaccinated.

Patients can walk-in to Immediate Care at Northfield Park next week, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and get vaccinated.
