ELKHART — The local recreational vehicle industry continues to grow, according to the first shipment numbers for 2017. 

January shipments were up 7 percent over the same period in 2016, as the industry shipped a total of 33,859 units, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. That represents a 2.7 percent gain over last December's robust total of 32,970.

All towable RVs, led by conventional travel trailers, rose 6.2 percent in January reaching a total of 28,931 units. Motor home shipments reached 4,928 units, paced by Type C and Type B motor homes.

Type A motor homes saw a 2.9 percent decrease in shipments for the month of January compared to January 2016.
