NEW CARLISLE — A potential compromise on a proposed industrial complex looks like it could shrink the controversial plan by several thousand acres.

New Carlisle Town Council members unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday night outlining what St. Joseph County officials could do in order to develop about 3,000 acres that the town would agree not to oppose.

The area would be bounded by U.S. 20 and Indiana 2 to the north and south, and Snowberry and Willow roads to the east and west.

That amount of acreage contrasts with 7,200 acres originally proposed for initial development of the Indiana Enterprise Center, a county economic development plan touted as potentially one of the largest industrial “mega-parks” in the U.S.

Town officials said the resolution was the first step in a process. A similar resolution would need to be adopted by the county, they said, followed by a memorandum of understanding detailing provisions. Public input also would be sought, although when and how weren’t clear.
