Knox County on Wednesday saw another record-breaking single-day jump in new coronavirus cases.

The Indiana State Department of Health recorded another 78 confirmed cases of COVID-19 here, breaking the previous single-day record of 73 set on Nov. 22.

It’s now been a month since Knox County has seen a single-day increase of fewer than 10 cases.

Knox County Health Officer Dr. Alan Stewart said this single-day record is likely only the first of many to come as the fallout from families getting together over the Thanksgiving holiday continues.

“We’ll keep seeing this, I’m certain,” he said. “We’ve already got families that are quarantined due to positive cases.

“We’ll continue to see these kinds of numbers,” he said. “I’m just afraid of how high they’re going to get.”

Stewart, too, warned that as early as next week, Knox County is likely to move to red on the state’s color-coded COVID dashboard. Red is the most severe category and would limit gatherings to fewer than 20 people.

Currently, Knox County is designated as orange, which limits gatherings to no more than 50 people without prior approval from local heath authorities.

There were no additional deaths reported on Wednesday, although Stewart has said there will be more. It’s taking quite some time for local deaths contributed to COVID-19 to be recorded at the state level.

Knox County has, according to the state so far, 22 COVID-19-related deaths.
