Hazardous road conditions and more than a foot of snow are coming to Michiana this week in what is expected to be the largest snowfall so far of the season.
In addition to lots of snow, the anticipated system is forecast to bring freezing rain and high winds, making travel difficult for much of Wednesday and Thursday.
“This isn’t the blizzard of ’78, but this is going to be one of the biggest ones we’ve seen, I think, in the last five, perhaps 10, years,” said meteorologist Matt Rudkin, who recently launched his own social media-driven weather service.
Unlike lake effect snow, which usually impacts areas closer to Lake Michigan, this week’s snowfall is caused by moisture-rich air from the Gulf of Mexico colliding with a northern cold front, Rudkin said.

The means the whole Michiana area, including southern areas like Knox and Warsaw, will see between 10 and 12 inches of snow by Thursday evening, with some areas getting even more than that.
