Citing pandemic struggles, Kauffman Engineering is shutting down two plants in Lebanon and laying off 58 employees.
The company started in 1973 has told the state it will permanently close facilities on Ransdell Road and Mt. Zion Road beginning in January. In a written statement, the company wrote the cause of the closure is “the ongoing economic impact of the supply chain and labor disruption brought about by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.”
Kauffman operates 10 other plants, two of them in Logansport, plus several other states and Mexico.
“It is expected that all 47 employees will be permanently laid off on January 21, 2022,” the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification requirement sent to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development reads. “Another 11 employees will be laid off on March 18, 2022. Four employees will be offered internal positions within the company. Kauffman expects that the closing of the facilities and layoffs will be permanent.”
“The employees impacted at the facilities will have the opportunity to work with the WorkOne office in Lebanon to find new employment,” Boone Economic Development Corporation Director of Communications and Marketing Chassity Neckers said. “They will also have access to our newly redesigned WorkInBoone.com site which is Boone County’s premier job connector and currently has hundreds of open positions.”
The custom manufacturer made and distributed cable harnesses, circuit boards, grounding straps, lead wires and more. The business sold in 2019 to Monomoy Capital Partners, a private investment firm. Back then, Jaime Forsyth, Monomoy managing director, had high hopes for the firm.
The WARN Act requires companies to give 60 days’ notice to the state in advance of plant closing or mass layoffs.
