The Seymour City Council approved a $654,000 tax abatement for the purchase of equipment by a commercial printing company that has been doing business at the Freeman Field Industrial Park for three decades.
R.R. Donnelley’s 10-year tax abatement will allow the Chicago-based company to buy new manufacturing and information technology equipment. The company is expected to receive the equipment between February and December of this year.
No new jobs will be created as a result of the installation of the new equipment at the company located at 709 A Ave. East. According to the company’s statement of benefits, it currently has a workforce 111 people who earn a total of $4,115,369 in salaries.
In the first year under the tax abatement, R.R. Donnelley will be fully exempt from paying property taxes. After the first year, the company will pay property taxes by 10% increments annually for 10 years.
Jim Plump, executive director of Jackson County Industrial Development Corp., presented the request to the council, which approved it by 7-0 vote. Christopher Booth, director of operations for R.R. Donnelley in Seymour, attended virtually.
In 2019, R.R. Donnelley received a $3.4 million tax abatement for new equipment. At that time, 123 people were employed with the company.
Around the same time, the company was given a $114 million contract from the U.S. Government Publishing Office to produce materials used for the public to respond to the 2020 Census. This included questionnaires, letters, inserts, postcards and envelopes.
R.R. Donnelley, founded in 1864, provides marketing and business communications, commercial printing and related services.
In 1992, the firm purchased American Inline Graphics, a company founded in 1986, at Freeman Field. R.R. Donnelley has 200 locations in 28 countries and 33,000 employees.
