Hospitals across Indiana are being hit hard by a holiday-season surge of COVI19 patients, filling many beds and taxing healthcare workers — with a post-holiday surge likely and the omicron variant still not at its worst.
Hospitals in Muncie, Richmond and Lafayette are seeing record or near-record numbers and ICU beds are filling up with the unvaccinated.
How bad is it?
“Horrible. Unprecedented. New records every day,” said Jeff Bird, physician and president of IU Health East Central Region.
“We need your help,” Bird added. “It’s more important now than it’s ever been that the only way to get out of this is to get vaccinated. The vaccine is so safe and it’s so effective. And the new, dangerous variant is in Indiana and it’s going to overwhelm us in the next two weeks.”
