EVANSVILLE— Vanderburgh County reported two new deaths from COVID-19 Thursday, bringing the total to 200.

The county also reported 313 new cases, according to an Indiana State Department of Health, shattering the previous record.

This is the first time the number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases has exceeded 300 in one day. A total of 15,547 people in Vanderburgh County have now tested positive for the new coronavirus.

The only other surrounding county to report additional deaths was Gibson, which saw one more for a total of 55.

Ninety-nine confirmed COVID-19 deaths were reported across Indiana Thursday, bringing the statewide death toll to 7,911. The state added 6,543 new cases for a total of 511,485 since the start of the pandemic.

The seven-day positivity rates for unique individuals metric, which covers the period of Dec. 18-24, remains higher than 20% in all area counties, with Spencer, Gibson and Perry above 30%.

Hospital officials have expressed concern over high hospitalization rates in the past month as cases have risen. On Thursday, the state dashboard reported that COVID-19 patients were using 30.6% of ICU beds in the 12-county District 10, down from the previous days. The share of ICU beds available decreased, however, to 13.2%.

Statewide, the number of ICU beds available is higher at 20.4%. COVID-19 patients are using 29.6% of Indiana ICU beds.
