Monroe County’s tight labor market is prompting Cook Group to shift some production to other facilities, including in Mexico.

A company spokeswoman said the company has had more than 350 job openings in Monroe and Owen counties all year and has struggled, despite a wage increase, to fill them.

“Moving production out of Bloomington is … one of our last resorts, but a necessity to ensure patients have the medical devices they need,” said Marsha Lovejoy, global manager of public relations.

“While some employees may shift departments, we are not moving jobs,” she told The Herald-Times via email.

Cook is “actively hiring” hundreds of people in Bloomington, Ellettsville and Spencer for roles including medical device assembly. The jobs pay a starting wage of $15 per hour or, for the second shift, $16.50. That’s an annual wage of $34,320.
