LAFAYETTE – U.S. Rep. Jim Baird won his first reelection challenge, turning back Lafayette Democrat Joe Mackey in Tuesday’s election.

Baird took 66% of the vote in the congressional district that includes Tippecanoe County and its surrounding counties.

“During the next two years, I will continue working toward solutions for families impacted by the ongoing pandemic, helping my fellow veterans and expanding rural broadband,” Baird said Tuesday night. “Our communities are a special place where we value kindness and honesty. I will continue my commitment to lead with civility and conviction. In the midst of partisanship, let us never forget we are all Americans that must unify for the good of our nation.”

Baird, a farmer from Greencastle and former state representative, first won the 4th District seat in 2018, after four-term U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita stepped down for what turned out to be an unsuccessful run for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.
