Midwest-based video rental company Family Video announced it will close all remaining store locations, a total of more than 250 nationwide, beginning Jan. 6.

Keith Hoogland, the CEO of ownership company Highland Ventures LTD, said in a statement the decision to close locations was due to the lack of foot traffic and the limited number of movie releases caused by the effects of COVID-19.

“I am extremely thankful to our employees and customers that were instrumental in Family Video’s success. Without you, we would not have been the last man standing in our industry,” he said.

Several area locations in Mishawaka and South Bend closed in recent years, but the remaining three locations in Mishawaka, Elkhart and Niles will soon follow. The company had 81 stores remaining in Indiana.

Family Video stated that liquidation sales will begin with items such as DVDs, gumball machines and fixtures. Stores will remain open until every item is sold.
