SOUTH BEND —  Notre Dame officials are calling a $50 million gift the largest of its kind in university history.

Alumni Harry Fath and his wife, Linda, have pledged the support to exclusively fund undergraduate financial aid, Notre Dame officials announced Tuesday.

"This extraordinarily generous gift will provide much-needed flexibility in offering financial aid packages tailored to the needs of our students and their families," Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins said in the release.

University officials say the Faths approached Notre Dame seeking opportunities to make a difference in the lives of prospective students.

Harry Fath, a 1963 graduate of the university, has served on the Notre Dame Law School Advisory Council since 2000. He served in the U.S. Army after graduating from Notre Dame, attended law school at the University of Cincinnati and founded a real estate management company, Fath Properties, after several years practicing law.
