Catalent is making “disruptive” changes to its work shifts and will eliminate about 200 temporary positions, a company official told employees in a meeting.

Andrew Espejo, general manager of Catalent’s Bloomington operations, said employees will have to switch from eight-hour shifts to 12-hour shifts. Employees will work four days and three days per week in alternating weeks.

The new shifts will start in late August, but employees have to request new shifts by the middle of this month. They are not guaranteed their first choice. Workers will learn of their new shift no later than July 1.

The drug maker said via email it is making the moves to “optimize our operations.” However, employees in the meeting raised concerns about child care availability, pay and job security.

A Herald-Times reporter viewed a recording of the meeting in which Espejo said the company recognizes the changes are “very disruptive” but are necessary to the Bloomington site’s “long-term sustainability.”
