Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 jumped from 2,012 on Sunday to 2,203 on Monday, the highest number since Sept. 24. Hospitalizations have risen 70% in November. COVID patients now occupy 24.1% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds.

Indiana’s top medical groups pleaded Tuesday for more people to get COVID-19 vaccine shots as the state is in the midst of a new surge of infections and hospitalizations.

The organizations warned that the vast majority of current hospitalized COVID-19 patients are unvaccinated and that hospitals are stressed by caring for more critically ill patients who face longer stays.

The Indiana Hospital Association, Indiana State Medical Association and Indiana State Nurses Association said more vaccinations are needed to relieve pressure on the state’s health care system.

“Should the current trends continue, everyone in need of health care could be impacted,” the groups said in a statement. “We urge all Hoosiers who have not yet received a vaccine or who are eligible to get a booster to do so before winter arrives to ensure a hospital bed is available for all in need.”

The all-time high for COVID hospitalizations in Indiana during the pandemic was 3,460 on Nov. 30,2020. The most recent peak was 2,687 on Sept. 13.

The state on Tuesday reported 4,080 more COVID-19 cases, bringing the pandemic total to 1,101,185.

More than 3.4 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Tuesday at 5 a.m. after a daily increase of 5,006. Meanwhile, more than 805,000 Hoosiers have already gotten vaccine boosters.

The department said 60.3% of Indiana residents 18 and older are fully vaccinated.
