In pursuit of speedy deliveries, Amazon plans to open a new same-day delivery facility in Boone County that will help it make more one-hour and three-hour deliveries in the Indianapolis area.
Amazon announced Thursday that it plans to open the 248,000-square foot facility in a recently completed distribution center at 5065 E. 500 S. in Whitestown. The location in Indianapolis Logistics Park-Northwest offers quick access to Interstate 65.
Amazon did not disclose how much it was spending on the facility, an opening date or exactly how many people would work there.
“The facility will create hundreds of full-time jobs and leverage advanced robotics technology to process tens of thousands of customer orders daily,” Amazon said in a news release.
Amazon announced a major effort last month to offer express delivery of more than 90,000 products in hundreds of areas across the country. The charge for three-hour delivery is $4.99 for Amazon Prime members and $14.99 for nonmembers.
One-hour deliveries are also available in many areas at a cost of $9.99 for Amazon Prime members and $19.99 for nonmembers.
Amazon said the Whitestown project marks “significant investment in Boone County’s economic growth and enhanced delivery capabilities for Prime members across Greater Indianapolis.”
Amazon has been announcing similar facilities at numerous sites throughout the United States.
The e-commerce giant said the same-day delivery sites represent its “most streamlined operations, featuring cutting-edge robotics systems including autonomous mobile robots that safely transport items throughout the facility.”
Amazon said the automation doesn’t replace jobs, but “creates better, safer jobs that leverage human expertise alongside technological innovation.”
Whitestown is no stranger to Amazon. The town is home to a 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center that employs more than 2,000 people and fills 100,000 orders each day.
Amazon said the new facility will offer full-time jobs with compensation averaging $23 per hour, plus benefits.
“Our new Whitestown facility directly powers the ultra-fast delivery speeds Indiana customers are looking for,” Kyle DeGiulio, Amazon’s regional senior economic development manager, said in written remarks. “This investment enables our recently launched 1-hour and 3-hour delivery options, bringing tens of thousands of everyday essentials to doorsteps faster than ever before. This facility shows how we’re continuing to build the infrastructure that makes faster, more convenient service possible.”
Amazon said it has created more than 24,500 full- and part-time jobs in Indiana since 2010 and invested more than $31.1 billion across the state. It has more than 40 facilities in the state, including 15 fulfillment and sortation centers and 11 delivery stations.
