One of the main arteries into Gary’s Miller community was still closed Monday following a 20-car Norfolk Southern freight train derailment Dec. 23 and not expected to reopen for as many as 10 days.
Gary officials said the derailment took place on the CSX tracks along U.S. 12, near County Line Road.
No injuries were reported, but the derailment left mechanical debris around the tracks along U.S. 12 near the Indiana Dunes National Park.
Norfolk spokesman Jeff DeGraff said Monday the cause of the derailment was still under investigation. He said debris was still being cleared at the site, and repairs were continuing. He said train service was restored Dec. 24.
“There were no hazardous materials involved in the incident,” he said.
In a previous release, Gary Fire Chief Sean O’Donnell said several hopper cars overturned, but they did not pose an environmental or public safety threat.
