Gas prices have soared by nearly 40 cents a gallon over the past week in Northwest Indiana.
The average gas price rose 39.7 cents per gallon over the past week to $3.88 a gallon on Monday in the Gary metropolitan area that encompasses much of Northwest Indiana, according to GasBuddy. Prices have soared 114.6 cents per gallon since last month and 68.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago due to the war in Iran.
Diesel gas prices have climbed to $5.22 a gallon, the highest since 2022, according to GasBuddy.
The average price of gas on Monday was $3.91 a gallon in Lake County, $3.85 a gallon in Porter County, $3.89 a gallon in LaPorte County, $3.76 a gallon in Newton County, $3.84 a gallon in Jasper County, $3.89 a gallon in Starke County and $3.74 a gallon in Starke County, according to AAA.
Gas prices range from $3.69 a gallon to $4.29 a gallon on Monday in Northwest Indiana, according to GasBuddy.
Nationally, gas prices rose 24.3 cents per gallon to $3.92 a gallon on Monday. The average price of gas was $4.39 a gallon throughout most of the Chicago metro area, an increase of 58.1 cents per gallon.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, estimated gas prices would rise to an average of $4.19 a gallon in Indiana Monday.
“Gas prices continued to rise nationwide over the last week as seasonal factors, combined with ongoing supply concerns tied to the continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, pushed both gasoline and diesel prices sharply higher,” De Haan said. “It now appears increasingly likely that the national average price of gasoline will reach the $4-per-gallon mark – potentially as early as this week – for the first time since 2022, while diesel prices are surging to multi-year highs, with some markets nearing record territory. There are few signs of stabilization so far, as global oil prices continue to climb and early indications suggest consumers may begin to pull back in response to the rapid pace of increases.”
