St. Joseph County is in the running for a massive electric vehicle battery plant that could employ more than 1,000 people in the next couple of years.

Ultium Cells, a joint venture of LG Energy Solutions and General Motors, already has announced the construction of three such battery cell manufacturing plants in Tennessee, Ohio and Lansing, Mich.

The plant in Tennessee, for example, is expected cost about $2.3 billion, occupy about 2.8 million square feet and create 1,300 new jobs.

“Ultium Cells with the support of GM officials are in discussions with the appropriate local officials on the abatement application,” Waid added. “We look forward to the application being reviewed and hopefully approved later this month.”

Waid added that the “tax abatement is a critical step of the project moving forward.”
