MUNCIE — Vermillion County, which occupies a sliver of geography between the Wabash River and the Illinois border north of Terre Haute, is the latest county to turn to Delaware County for help housing jail inmates.
Delaware County Sheriff Tony Skinner received permission from the Delaware County Commissioners Monday to enter into an agreement with with Vermilion County for inmate housing.
Vermillion County's seat, Newport, is 145 miles away.
Delaware County receives $40 a day per inmate for out-of-county prisoners, regardless of the distance from the county prosecuting the inmates.
"All of the sheriffs in Indiana have good communications," Skinner said of the effort to help one other with jail space.
