RICHMOND — Hill's Pet Nutrition has asked Richmond Common Council to approve a 95% tax abatement on new equipment.

Council on Monday referred the request to the tax abatement committee without further discussion.

Hill's plans a $17 million investment at its Richmond facility, 2325 Union Pike. That investment includes $13 million for a new packaging line and $4 million to convert to seven-day-a-week production. The conversion to seven days, which is expected to be completed during early 2022, will create 44 new jobs, and the new line, which is expected to be operational in 2023, will create 20.

Those jobs will have minimum wages of $18.57 per hour with an additional $14.13 per hour in health insurance benefits, according to the abatement request.

Richmond's facility competed with facilities in Kentucky and Kansas for the additional investment.
