Only a select few people ever got to enter Indiana's highest-priced home, the DeHaan Estate, which sold for a record-breaking $14.5 million last year.

The opulent 61-room 41,762-square-foot mansion, located on 151 acres on the White River near the Indianapolis Museum of Art, belonged to Christel DeHaan, the businesswoman and philanthropist who owned Resort Condominiums International and founded Christel House International. The massive estate in Indianapolis has been described as "one of the most accurate Palladian-style villas ever built in the United States."

Long shrouded from public view and largely only visible while hiking along the White River, the grandiloquent DeHaan Estate is now open to the public.

RH, the upscale California-based furniture retailer long known as Restoration Hardware and known for its glossy, phone book-thick catalogs, opened a home furnishings showroom, store and restaurant on the property at 4501 N. Michigan Road in Indianapolis. It now features a wine bar, art installations, an interior design studio and lakeside terraces.

The retailer describes it as "one of the largest, most inspiring and immersive physical expressions of the brand to date."

“The DeHaan Estate is one of the most magical properties in North America, and we are honored to open its gates to the public for the first time,” said RH Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman. “From the immaculately groomed grounds and tree-lined driveway, to the massive stone terrace and boat dock overlooking the lake and forest, and the perfectly proportioned rooms filled with natural light from the abundance of windows, RH Indianapolis is a place to come and dream, be inspired by the architecture; get lost in the views, enjoy a meal in the grand ballroom or sip a glass of wine while strolling through the gardens.”

The showroom features RH's various lines of luxury home furnishings along with displays of art, antiques and artifacts from around the globe. To get to the showroom, visitors head down a long drive flanked by a double linden-tree allée, enter through iron doors and pass through a sequence of gaudy rooms with Italian-travertine floors and walnut doors fashioned in Paris.

The east wing is home to the RH Interior Design Studio, which offers a variety of interior design services. Both the east and west wings feature artistic lifestyle installations by designers from across the world.

The palatial grand ballroom was transformed into The Dining Room restaurant overlooking the 35-acre private lake, formal gardens and woods on the property. It features French doors, a 27-foot vaulted ceiling, fluted pilasters and a menu of classics. The Wine Bar will serve Champagne and wines from around the world, including from small Napa Valley vintners.

Visitors also can see The Lakeside Terrace inspired by Europe's classic gardens, geometric topiaries in the West Gardens and lushly appointed bedroom suites that can only be accessed by a 30-foot-tall floating stairway of St. Germain French limestone.

The showroom is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern time. For more information, visit RH.com.
