WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — Since the then-revised New Chauncey Neighborhood Plan was adopted in 2013, growing pains from neighboring Purdue University have continued to strain residents.

During the council's Dec. 4 meeting, the city will formally request the Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission to conduct a new study on the New Chauncey Neighborhood Plan.

Sponsored by city councilwoman Rabita Rajkarnikar, the request notes that in the last 12 years, the neighborhood has experienced significant changes that can be credited to Purdue's enrollment patterns and the strain on the local housing market, transportation and redevelopment pressures.

Another major issue is parking, particularly on weekend home games for Purdue athletics. Through surveys and conversations with constituents, Rajkarnikar said residents say they often feel stuck in their homes on game days.

"Street parking is free on the weekends, and even on my street I know of a few rentals that typically have several cars for the renters who live there," Rajkarnikar said. "I really feel for them, because if they move their cars or have to leave for whatever reason, they'll lose their street parking. And it isn't just for an hour or two; it's a long period of time."
