The city of Fishers has completed an annexation of nearly 1,000 acres on its southeastern border and added an additional 3,000 residents to the city.
The city announced Thursday that the annexation makes Fishers, with 104,000 residents, the fourth-largest city in Indiana behind Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville and ahead of South Bend and Carmel.
Fishers officials initiated the annexation process last summer, and members of the City Council unanimously approved the annexation in January, but several steps remained before the move could become official.
The annexation covers a 994-acre area bounded roughly by 113th Street to the north, the Hamilton-Madison-Hancock county lines to the east, the Rossana Village subdivision and parcels west to Flat Fork Creek Park on the southern border, and Cyntheanne Road, the Luxhaven subdivision, and Geist Park on the western border.
“It’s exciting to fulfill this component of our long-range annexation plans and officially welcome our newest Fishers residents to our community,” Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said in written remarks. “We look forward to serving this area and bringing efficient delivery of services and a high quality of life for thousands of residents who call southeastern Fishers home.”
The area annexed by Fishers was previously an unincorporated area of Hamilton County where Fishers had zoning jurisdiction since 2005 and provided sanitary sewer service. The city also provided fire and emergency medical services to residents through a contract with Fall Creek Township.
On June 1, the Fishers Health Department began providing access to resident services and public health support. The area’s roads, bridges and sidewalks were incorporated into the city’s inventory for maintenance and capital improvement planning. The Fishers Police Department began patrolling the area and providing emergency dispatch response. Residents also started receiving programming and facility discounts for Fishers parks.
This fall, the Public Works Department will provide snow removal and road maintenance. Beginning Jan. 1, the annexed area will switch to Republic Services trash and recycling pickup and gain access to Fishers stormwater utility services.
