If fans checked the upcoming opera schedule, perhaps using some Galilean binoculars, they might notice a considerable change in this season at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music: The number of total performances has been sliced in half.
Rather than each production having a two-weekend run, potential attendees will now have only one weekend to catch a spirited performance of Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" or the debut university-level production of Jack Perla's "An American Dream."
"We have a limited staff. We have limited space,” explained Chris Mills, director of communications for the Jacobs School.
Upcoming season:'Mean Girls,' 'Come From Away,' 'Hairspray' coming to IU Auditorium in 2023-24 season
Those limitations spawned a series of questions, weighed upon by the Jacobs leadership.
"How can we satisfy everybody? How can we still have the community feel like they're involved and get to see what they want? (But at the same time), how can we give the students the opportunities they need, and how can we still have a variety of presentations for everybody?" Mills said.
