Union Health on Saturday said the state health department has issued the necessary Certificate of Public Advantage and the merger between Union Hospital and Terre Haute Regional Hospital is now in effect.

Union said it and its civic partners had “forged a path that honors accountability, expands access and secures a brighter future for our community.” Union greatly credited the leadership of Gov. Mike Braun and Dr. Lindsay Weaver, state health commissioner.

“I am deeply grateful to the remarkable team at Union Health and the many legislators and community leaders who supported this effort over the years,” Steve Holman, president and CEO of Union Health said in a news release.

Union said it is now moving forward with the development of detailed implementation plans outlined in the COPA and creating a platform to share its progress with the public.

Union wrote, “Our commitment to providing you with exceptional care close to home is as strong as ever, and we’re grateful to move forward together with stability, reassurance and a shared vision for an even healthier future.”

First change announced

Union on Saturday also announced that, effective immediately, wound care services and labor and delivery services will be consolidated at Union Hospital, 1606 N. Seventh St., Terre Haute.

“These two services will no longer be offered at the location formerly known as Terre Haute Regional Hospital,” Union said in a separate news release. “Union Health is working with affected patients to transition their future appointments.”

Union Health also said the former Terre Haute Rgional Hospital will now be called Union Regional Hospital.

Union Health said the change follows careful planning and coordination and was included in its 2025 Certificate of Public Advantage application that was approved.

Union says it remains committed to delivering comprehensive care across west central Indiana and eastern Illinois, and it will continue with updates to the public.

Union and Terre Haute Regional, which was previously owned by HCA Healthcare, submitted their COPA application on Feb. 5 to combine their two facilities. It was the two organizations’ second application, the first having been withdrawn in early January for revisions.

The governor announced the state’s COPA approval Nov. 9.
