School boards throughout Northwest Indiana will meet this week to consider shaking up their leadership, consider raises for school board members and discuss their district’s finances.
Here’s a look at what’s on the agendas for some of this week’s education meetings in Northwest Indiana.
LaPorte Community School Corp.: When: Monday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m.
Where: Educational Services Center, 1000 Harrison St., LaPorte, or on YouTube.
The LaPorte Community School Board will vote on a raise and five-year contract extension for Superintendent Sandra Wood.
Wood’s original contract hired her at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year with a base salary of $160,000. The proposed contract would pay her a base salary of $175,000 for the 2026-2027 school year, $180,000 base salary for the 2027-2028 school year and thereafter receive equal raises that a teacher would receive at LaPorte.
Assistant Superintendent of Operations Aaron Owney will give the board an update on LaPorte's finances. The board will also get a chance to re-organize its leadership.
Duneland School Corp.: When: Monday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m.
Where: Duneland School Corporation Administration Center, 601 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton, or on YouTube.
The Duneland School Board will vote on electing a president, vice-president and secretary at its upcoming meeting. Duneland’s administration is recommending the board to maintain its $2,000 a year salary, with a $150 fee for regular meetings and $75 for other meetings.
Chief Financial Officer Lynn Kwilasz is anticipated to give a presentation on the corporation’s finances to the board.
School City of Whiting: When: Monday, Jan. 12, at 4:30 p.m.
Where: School City of Whiting, 1500 Center St., Whiting, or on YouTube.
The Whiting School Board will be able to vote on electing a new board president, vice-president and secretary at its upcoming meeting.
East Porter County School Corp.: When: Monday, Jan. 12, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Administration Office Board Room, 502 East College Ave., Kouts, or on YouTube.
The East Porter School Board will vote on electing a president, vice-president and secretary at its upcoming school board meeting.
The board will also vote on selling two school buses, one with 120,000 miles and another with 107,500 miles.
The administration is also proposing hiring two new employees, approving the resignation of two employees, hiring five new coaches and approving the resignation of three coaches.
The administration will also give a presentation of the corporation’s finances to the board.
School Town of Munster: When: Monday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m.
Where: Administration Building, 8616 Columbia Ave., Munster, or on YouTube.
The Munster School Board will elect a president, vice-president and secretary to lead the school board.
The school board trustees are recommended to keep their existing salaries of $2,000 a year and receive a payment of $112 per regular board meeting and $62 for special board meetings and executive sessions.
The corporation’s administration recommends the purchase of two Blue Bird school buses for a total cost of $238,000.
Portage Township Schools: When: Monday, Jan. 12, at 5 p.m.
Where: Administration Building, 6240 Hwy. 6, Portage, or on YouTube.
The Portage School Board will elect a president, vice-president and secretary to lead the school board.
The school board will also vote on the school corporation’s membership with the Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce.
School Town of Highland: When: Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 6 p.m.
Where: School Town of Highland Administration Building, 9145 Kennedy Ave., Highland, or on YouTube.
The Highland School Board will elect a president, vice-president and secretary to lead the school board.
The administration will give a presentation of the corporation’s finances to the board. Data from the Distressed Unit Appeal Board shows that the corporation’s revenue outpaced its expenses in 2024, according to the most up to date information on the state’s website.
Hanover Community School Corp.
When: Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Hanover Administration Building Board Room, 14525 Wicker Ave., Cedar Lake, or on YouTube.
The Hanover School Board will elect a president, vice-president and secretary to lead the school board.
The board will also consider requests for a new Hanover Racing EV Grand Prix Club, Lincoln Elementary Afterschool Enrichment Club, Jane Ball Elementary Enrichment Club and Red Cedars Elementary Afterschool Club. The enrichment clubs are meant to expand a student’s exposure to hobbies and interests, build social skills and independence and give students hands-on STEM activities.
River Forest Community School Corp.
When: Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: River Forest Learning Center Door 1, 3300 Indiana St., Hobart.
The River Forest School Board will elect a president, vice-president and secretary to lead the school board.
