If something stinks in East Chicago, it might be wafting from the sewers.

A string of manhole thefts is puzzling East Chicago city officials.

The city is calling on the thieves to stop stealing city property and on residents to report missing manholes or any manhole thefts they see.

"Recently there has been a rash of manhole covers being removed from sewers throughout the city, specifically the Southside. Manhole covers are the property of the City of East Chicago, are costly to replace and some require an extended period of time to produce," the East Chicago Sanitary District said in a press release. "Most importantly, they are placed for the safety of all passing through the streets. We ask if you come across a missing manhole or drain cover that you don't hesitate to get in touch with the EC Sanitary District at 219-391-8466. Also, if you see anyone trying to remove a cover, or any suspicious activity, you are asked to please call the police department. Remember, for your safety, please do not confront anyone. See something, say something."

It would not be the first time thieves have targeted Northwest Indiana infrastructure, which is typically sold for scrap. Thieves have previously stolen live NIPSCO power lines in Gary and an entire abandoned bridge in Hammond.

Anyone who sees or has information about a manhole theft should call the East Chicago Police Department's non-emergency line at 219-660-0000 or the ECPD's anonymous tip line at 219-391-8500.
