The St. Joseph County Council voted 7-2 on Tuesday to approve the rezoning of an isolated patch of farmland so that a local developer could build about 250 single-family homes and about 250 apartments east of New Carlisle.
Developer Pat Matthews is counting on housing demand from the growth of workers at Amazon’s data centers and the GM/Samsung SDI battery plant to support the Hedegcroft Village on 69 acres.
It would be northeast of U.S. 20 and Spruce Road, with one entrance on U.S. 20.

The council voted to rezone the land from agricultural to a planned unit development, with Bryan Tanner and Jenn Shabazz voting against it.
Tanner raised concerns that it didn’t fit with a comprehensive plan for the area, which calls for medium-density housing instead.
