The Indiana Commission for Higher Education announced on Tuesday, the Indiana College Core will be offered at 270 Indiana high schools during the 2024-25 school year, a 20% increase in participating schools compared to last year.
The Indiana College Core, established in 2012, is a set of 30 credit hours of college-level general education coursework offered through dual-credit and dual-enrollment classes that can be transferred to all Indiana public higher education institutions and some private institutions.
The certificate is meant to allows high school students to earn a full year of general education college credits at little to no cost.
The number of high schools offering the Indiana College Core has increased each year since 2021, with 141 schools offering the certificate in 2022, and 222 offering it last year.
Across Northwest Indiana, 20 public and private high schools offer the Indiana College Core.
The number of schools offering the block of college-level courses is expected to increase with the passage of Senate Enrolled Act 8 earlier this year. The new legislation mandates all Indiana high schools to either offer the Indiana College Core, submit an implementation plan to offer the Indiana College Core by the 2026-27 school year or submit a feasibility report if they do not plan on offering the certificate. Schools will have until Oct. 1 to submit either the implementation plan or feasibility report to the commission.
According to the commission, nearly 2,400 high school students earned the certificate in 2022, with 92% of them attending college.
